Dover White Cliffs

Our journey begins with a scenic stroll along the iconic White Cliffs of Dover, offering breathtaking views of the English Channel and the French coast on a clear day. We'll take some time to appreciate the natural beauty and perhaps capture some memorable photos.

From Dover, we'll embark on a picturesque coastal drive, passing through the historic Roman fortress town of Richborough, a significant site in the Roman conquest of Britain. We'll also journey through the charming town of Deal, known for its historic castle built by Henry VIII, offering a glimpse into England's Tudor past.

Margate

Our next stop is the vibrant seaside town of Margate. Historically a popular resort, Margate has also gained renown as an artistic hub. It was once home to the celebrated Georgian painter J.M.W. Turner, whose evocative works, such as "The Fighting Temeraire" and "Rain, Steam and Speed – The Great Western Railway," captured the transformative impact of the Industrial Revolution on society. We'll explore Margate's connection to Turner and its thriving arts scene, perhaps visiting the Turner Contemporary gallery (optional, time permitting).

Canterbury

The highlight of our tour is a visit to the magnificent cathedral city of Canterbury. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Canterbury Cathedral stands as a testament to Gothic architecture at its finest. Prepare to be awestruck by its soaring towers, intricate stained glass windows, and rich history.

Canterbury's history is deeply intertwined with the dramatic story of Thomas Becket, the Archbishop of Canterbury, whose martyrdom in the cathedral in 1170 dramatically altered the course of English history. His assassination, orchestrated by King Henry II, transformed Canterbury into a major pilgrimage destination, attracting devotees from across Europe and leaving an enduring mark on the city's spiritual significance.

Canterbury's legacy extends beyond its religious importance. The city is immortalised in Geoffrey Chaucer's timeless masterpiece, "The Canterbury Tales." Written in the 14th century, this collection of stories follows a diverse group of pilgrims on their journey to Becket's shrine, offering a fascinating window into medieval life and culture. While we may not have time to walk the entire pilgrim's route, the atmosphere of the city will bring Chaucer's tales to life.

We'll ensure a timely transfer back to the Port of Dover for your onward journey. Throughout this enriching shore excursion, your knowledgeable guide will bring the history, culture, and landmarks to life, all while you travel in comfort in your private vehicle.
