Monoliths: Stonehenge

We take a drive through the New Forest (look out for the ponies roaming freely around) to the World heritage site of Stonehenge. We will take the side roads to take in some splendid thatched villages on the way.

Stonehenge, a prehistoric monument on Salisbury Plain in the ancient county of Wiltshire, consists of a ring of standing stones, each a massive sarsen or bluestone, arranged in a circular pattern. The site's construction, spanning several phases from around 3000 BCE to 1600 BCE, remains a subject of intense archaeological debate.

The most iconic feature is the outer circle of sarsen stones, topped with horizontal lintels, and the inner ring of smaller bluestones. Surrounding the stone circles are earthworks, including a ditch and bank. The purpose of Stonehenge is still unknown, but theories range from a burial ground to a ceremonial site or an astronomical calendar, all contributing to its enduring mystery and historical significance.

Straw roof Bronze Age huts.

The Visitor Centre provides an immersive experience, allowing you to visualise the stone circle's evolution through the ages. Discover locally unearthed artefacts, including the tools used in its construction, and learn about the theories surrounding its purpose, from marking solstices to lunar observations. Outside, witness reconstructions of Bronze Age huts, offering a glimpse into the lives of those who shaped this ancient landscape.

Enhancing your transfer to London, our expert guide will weave together captivating stories of history and culture, ensuring a comfortable and deeply enriching journey. We'll conclude your tour with a seamless and punctual arrival at your chosen London destination.
