Nothing added

This popular walking tour–available in 5, 6 and 7 hour versions–explores the remarkable City Churches of London, focusing on the architectural genius of Sir Christopher Wren. This tour can be customised to your interest—perhaps you're an art enthusiast and want to see Damien Hirst's work at Great St. Bartholomew's, or a history buff eager to learn about the London "Cockney" at St. Mary-le-Bow. As an added bonus we'll also visit the Temple of Mithras—a free-to-enter interactive historical recreation of a “Roman Temple for soldiers”.

Arrival at Tilbury: Your London Welcome

Step off your ship and straight into a London icon. Your private Black Cab will be waiting at Tilbury Port for a smooth, comfortable transfer into the heart of the capital. You’ll be greeted by your driver, Shane Healy—a qualified Westminster Guide—who will handle your luggage and share expert insights as the city unfolds around you.

Once your bags are securely dropped at your hotel, Shane will introduce you to your expert guide, Lee Cooper, to begin your adventure.

While Lee leads you through London’s historic hidden gems on foot, you enjoy a luxury few travelers experience: Shane and his cab remain on standby throughout your tour. This "mobile base" offers total peace of mind. Whether you need a quick rest between landmarks, want to whisk away to a site further afield, or prefer to avoid uneven pavements, your support team is always a moment away. Follow Lee’s curated route or customise your own—this is London, exactly how you want to see it.

Discover London's Historic Churches

In the 17th century, there were 107 churches within the 'Square Mile' of London. 86 of these were destroyed in the Great Fire of London and 51 were subsequently rebuilt. The Blitz of World War II destroyed many more, and some were not rebuilt. Today, 23 churches remain, along with 4 towers and partial ruins of two churches that now serve as places of contemplation.

Remains of arch from garden with foliage and wisteria.

For years, I navigated these streets as a London Black Cab driver, but today my passion lies in the "Knowledge" of a different kind. As a proud member and volunteer for the Friends of the City Churches (FCC), I help keep these historic doors open to the world. Having spent countless hours "watching" these landmarks, I’ve moved beyond the guidebooks to find the hidden layers of their history. I love sharing these overlooked treasures and the vibrant stories tucked away within their ancient stone walls.

Naturally, this tour will include a visit to St. Paul's Cathedral, Wren's masterpiece and a cornerstone of London's Baroque architecture. We'll also explore other captivating sites:

Ornate gold coloured pipes with carved oak.
  • St. Bride's Church: Explore this iconic church, long associated with journalists and newspapers, and admire its elegant Wren-designed architecture.
  • St Stephen Walbrook: Discover the fascinating history of the first Samaritans branch, which operated from a crypt beneath this church.
  • Holy Sepulchre London: Located across from the Old Bailey, this church is famously mentioned in the nursery rhyme "Oranges and Lemons." as "the Bells of Old Bailey".
  • St Martin, Ludgate: Designed by Wren, this church boasts a fascinating inscription claiming that Cadwallo, King of the Britons, is buried within its grounds.
  • St Botolph's Aldgate: Delve into the history of this church, with records dating back to 1115.

  • St. Dunstan-in-the-West: Marvel at the unique façade of this Fleet Street church, featuring a chiming clock with intriguing giant figures.
  • St Olaves: Witness the resilience of this church, whose bells were melted during the war and later recast using the original foundry.
  • All Hallows Aldgate: Another popular destination with its own unique charm.

Seamless hotel drop off

After your unforgettable London churches experience, relax as your friendly driver escorts you directly to your Central London hotel. We'll ensure a comfortable and efficient journey, dropping you right at the entrance, so you can unwind and reflect on your day of exploration without any hassle.

  • Accessibility: Shane's London Black Cab is wheelchair-accessible and can enter areas where regular cars are restricted.
  • Mix and Match: Families love our "mix and match" option! I can blend highlights from across our different tours to create a bespoke experience just for you. Tell me what you love, and I’ll handle the rest.
  • Luggage & Group Size: For your comfort and to ensure there's enough room for luggage (one large case and one hand luggage per person), we limit the number of passengers in the cab to a maximum of 4. If your group is larger than 4, please contact us to arrange additional transport and request a quote.
  • Return to port option: This same tour is available as a Tilbury Shore Excursion for parties without luggage.
  • What to Know: We recommend wearing comfortable shoes and dressing according to the weather.
