Interestingly enough, though, much of the City's new look is still greatly influenced by dear old St Paul's Cathedral. Indeed, the view to the Cathedral's beautiful dome is protected and several "viewing corridors" from high points around London have to be preserved. Which leads to interesting designs for new skyscrapers that need to literally "bend out of shape" to avoid blocking the protected view.

For many years, St Paul's Cathedral was the tallest building in the City of London. But the last few decades have seen drastic changes in the London skyline, with new skyscrapers redefining London's identity every few years. Indeed, these are not ordinary skyscrapers: each of them has a strong look, an identity of its own. Most of them even have an official name or an affectionate nickname: the Shard, the Gherkin, the Can of Ham, the Scalpel, the Walkie-Talkie,...

And as a building's average lifetime in the City of London is a mere 20 years, it keeps changing! There are hundreds of new tall buildings planned across London, not all welcomed with open arms of course.
