The Victorian architecture and shops with caption in art nouveau font 'Market Research'.

Leadenhall Market, a covered market in London, located on Gracechurch Street, is one of the oldest markets in London. It was built in the 14th century during Edward III’s reign. Whether it’s the fresh food – from cheeses to meats –, or the Brits trying to escape the ghastly weather, the covered market pulls thousands of visitors every day. No, they weren’t desperate for groceries, the 2012 Olympic Games, hosted in London, required the marathon runners to pass through the market place.

Ornate Victorian decoration and metal work.

Architecture

Architecturally, Leadenhall Market is quite stunning. The ceiling was designed by Sir Horace Jones in 1881 (recognised predominantly for the Tower Bridge) and the specular structure and colour palate is undoubtably the main tourist attraction to the markets. In 1991, major transformations took place concerning the decorating of the market. This proved a success, as the scheme was mentioned in the Civic Trust Awards of 1994, for its enhancement to the market’s character.

Film and the Magic of Harry Potter

Similar to other London attractions, the location has drawn several prominent films. Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (known as the Sorcerer’s Stone in United States of America) is one of many blockbuster films to record in the market. The market represented the area that lead to the wizarding pub The Leaky Cauldron. The shopping haven Diagon Alley was inspired by Leadenhall Market. The market also appears in The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, Hearafter and Love Aaj Kal. The pop group Erasure also filmed a music video at the market.

If you’re planning a trip to London, then Leadenhall Market is certainly worth a visit – just remember to bring some shopping money.
