London Zoo is part of the Zoological Society of London, based in Regents Park, it is aimed at the conservation of animals and their habitats. It is the world’s oldest scientific zoo. Established in 1828 for the scientific study of its collection of animals, it found a new purpose in 1847 when it first opened to the public. Today it houses one of the largest collections of animals in the United Kingdom.

Nature

London Zoo is a popular attraction to tour in the nation’s capital because it houses approximately 673 species of animal comprised of around 19,300 animals. A bonus to the zoo is that it is set in a breathtakingly beautiful are in London on the north side of Regents Park, with Regents Canal running right through it.

The Zoo is also famous for opening the first reptile house in 1949, the first public aquarium in 1853, the first insect house in 1881 and the first children’s zoo in 1938. All in all an amazing place to visit.

Magic & Film

Harry Potter, in the first book of the series and again later in the film adaptation, realised there was something different about himself when he held a conversation with a snake in the Reptile House at London Zoo – today you can see a plaque on the wall to commemorate this very event! See how you get on chatting to the animals when you visit this wonderful institution in Regents Park.

Harry Potter was not the only one to visit London Zoo on film: ‘An American Werewolf in London’, ‘Withnail and I’ the live action ‘101 Dalmations’ and many other popular films and tv series have used the zoos location and animals.
