There are several landmarks in Covent Garden. From the Royal Opera House, to the Theatre Royal, the area is teeming with history. In total, the area has 13 theatres, over 60 pubs and bars, and dozens of shops to explore. The famous puppet show, Punch and Judy – depicting slapstick interactions between Mr. Punch and his wife –, was noted by Samuel Pepys, a member of Parliament, all the way back in 1662.
Covent Garden London Private Guided Tours

[Covent Garden/] is a district in London. A popular shopping and tourism site, Covent Garden used to be known for selling fruit and vegetables. In the 7th century, prior to the Anglo-Saxons developing the area into a trading town called ‘Lundenwic’, the area was fields. 200 years later, however, after the area was abandoned again and returned to fields. It wouldn’t emerge again until 1200 to grow crops. The market of fruit and vegetables opened in 1654, however several taverns and coffee houses overshadowed it. Eventually, in 1974, the market was relocated to New Covent Garden Market 3 miles (5 kilometres) away.

Punch and Judy is still performed to this day, along with other street performances; from musicians, to magicians, to people preaching about the end of the world. If you’re interested in watching one of the shows, they run every day except Christmas, with performances lasting approximately 30 minutes. Not your thing? It will come as no surprise that, due to its cultural significance, the location has garnered attention from film studios and music alike. In My Fair Lady, Covent Garden is where Eliza Doolittle works. Johann Strauss II, an Austrian composer, even wrote a music piece dedicated to the area named ‘Memory of Covent Garden, op. 329'.
